Black Groodle Cafe
The Black Groodle is a small, cosy cafe, serving breakfast and lunch with Mediterranean inspired cuisines. It is located at 55 Mountain St, in Ultimo, an inner city suburb of Sydney. The cafe interior is dark and minimalist. The current space is comprised of an existing timber structure, concrete flooring, with the walls predominantly covered in black paint.
The client wanted to have a more contemporary, fresher feel to the space to improve the brand identity of the Black Groodle. The current industrial chic atmosphere needed to be maintained but the client felt that a subtle Mediterranean influence would lift the interior. He wanted a more interesting and efficient food display area, more seating, a homey and cosy feeling, and a smart solution for the gap between the working islands.
The concept behind the design was to fulfill all of the client expectations and focused on pockets of Mediterranean patterned tiles woven amongst the cleverly placed cantilevered tables which create the additional seating. The use of concrete walls and flooring provides the industrial look industrial concept and the black, white, and timber furniture is distributed with care throughout the space.
The food display countertop is timber material and is designed with an organic round shape near the centre which entices the customers to that area. The back dining area is adorned with warm red bricks in a dynamic, geometric pattern, providing a pleasant juxtaposition against the concrete surrounds.
